Import a guinea pig in Denmark : it is legal ?
Hi everybody !
Once again, sorry if I write this message in english : it's quite difficult for a danish language beginner to explain that in danish !
I have a friend breeder in Belgium, and she proposes me the guinea pig of my dreams. My question : is it legal to import a guinea pig in Denmark ?
Is there any problem at the customs ? Do the guinea pig has to be in quaranteen ?
How do other people do for have guinea pigs from other countries ?
Thank you for your reply if you have time.

Don't know whether to answer in Danish or English, but you get it in English..
It's legal to import to Denmark - my sister and I are currently planning an import from Canada to Denmark. How are you planning to get the cavy home?
When we import from Canada, the importer has to be approved as an importer from Canada, to do so. It's just a document from the ...? (Fødevarestyrelse) The cavys also need to be checked by a vet before they fly to Denmark (they are shipped by air without passager).
I don't know the rules regarding Belgium..
Hope it helped just a bit...

The guinea pig would come with my friend, by plane or by car.
So you think with the document you talk about and a "medical certificate" it would be ok ??
Where can I find the document ??
PS : my friend is a professionnal breeder. Do she need to show some official papers ??

I can imagine that the rules differ depending if you travel by plane or by car.
Recently we got animals from UK, which travelled by car.... don't remember the travelrute tho, except I think they took a ferry from UK to somewhere and drove back - and I am not sure they needed a shitload of papers for the trip.

I highly doubt that, since both belgium and denmark are members in EU... and I believe that there are 'easier' rules for transporting animals within the borders of fellow EU-countries.von_sortfods_opdræt skrev: i dont know if Belgium is a 3. world country then there is some speciffick rules...

Loosely translated

The rules, as was explained to us, are:
When you only travel through EU-contries, it is consideret regular transportation of pets. We didn't need any papers whatsoever.
The driver needed standard freightpapers.
When the animals are sold before arriving to Denmark, it is not import. It is only import, if they are sold in Denmark.
However, at several borders, it was checked that the animals were fine. But perhaps that was only because it was a cargo-truck.
But it was a bit of a mess to find out, and we got several different answers to our questions
